The Akwesasne Lacrosse Hall of Fame Board was established as a result of an agreement between the CLA First Nations Director (Mike Kanentakeron Mitchell) and the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame, whereby, every nonnative inductee in Ontario (player or builder) would be accompanied by a Native inductee from any number of the Iroquois Nation communities. The selection for the Native inductees is a shared responsibility of the Six Nations and Akwesasne Lacrosse Hall of Fame Boards.
The Six Nations Hall of Fame board will be responsible for the Western Door of the Confederacy which includes Grand River as well as the Seneca and Tuscarora Nation communities.
The Akwesasne Hall of Fame Board will be responsible for the Central and Eastern Door of the Confederacy which includes Onondaga, Oneida as well as the Mohawk Nation communities of Akwesasne, Kahnawake, and Kanesatake.
Each lacrosse community will have their own local hall of fame committees and can select a nominee for consideration to the Akwesasne or Six Nations Lacrosse Hall of Fame Board who will then process the final selection and forward the inductee’s name to the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame. The Community Hall of Fame Committees also shall select their own local inductee who otherwise might not fit the criteria for consideration into the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
The criteria for the hall of fame inductees shall be: a candidate must have had an exceptional individual career in the game of lacrosse, either as a player or as a builder at the highest level of competition, other considerations will include; being on a championship team at a national, state or provincial level and finally, to be considered, the inductee must have been retired from the game for at least five years. It is the intention of the two Native boards, to be as fair as possible in their final selections of nominees to the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame Board.
